New Digital POL Module Meets Power Needs of Advanced ICs
CUI Inc., operating from Tualatin in the State of Oregon, has announced the launch of a newly designed digital POL or point of load module that can fulfill the ever-increasing power needs of advanced integrated circuits. The new product is christened NDM3Z-90 and this module is not isolated. The POL can output around 90A, and comes in horizontal as well as in vertical packages, both of low profiles. It incorporates digitally advanced features while at the same time delivering benchmark power levels. Its digital features include programmable soft start and stop; phase spreading, voltage tracking, synchronization, voltage sequencing, sharing active current and a programmable output range apart from a number of monitoring capabilities.
The NDM3Z-90 uses the ZL8801 digital power controller, which is the latest device from Intersil and uses its ChargeMode Control Technology. This facilitates autonomous balancing of the continuous trade-off between system stability and dynamic performance. This allows designers to forego the traditional practice of reserving margins for factors such as ageing of the components, variations in manufacturing and temperature, which inevitably contribute to longer cycles in design and higher component costs. The POL has a peak efficiency of 91.4%, with an input of 12VDC, output of 1VDC and 50% load. The efficiency level is 88.7% up to full load. NDM3Z-90 is capable of parallel operation using four modules in active current sharing procedure to output a total of 360A. The NDM3Z-90 features zero compensation, to realize dynamic optimum stability on a real time basis, even as there are changes in conditions. The newly launched module complies with the TeraAMP standard set by the AMP Group, the consortium of power industries, for high current digital POL modules. The standard calls for highly efficient and technically advanced modules. The standard also allows plug and play interoperability between products manufactured by the members belonging to the AMP Group comprising CUI, Murata and Ericsson Power Modules. This helps the user greatly, as the use of an available brand allows saving time.
The NDM3Z-90 comes with a programmable output range of 0.6-1.8VDC, for which the input range is 7.5-14VDC. The user has a choice of controlling all digital features with dynamic programming through either PMBus or via CUI's Novum ACE GUI. The 90A family is offered in horizontal type that measures 50.8 mm x 19.1 mm x 9.7 mm, and vertical type measuring 50.80 mm x 9.47 mm x 19.10 mm. Additional flexibility is offered during the process of development by way of nesting the footprint. That paves the way for accommodating dual layouts when there are changes in the design requirement.
