TIPS FOR PREVENTING OSTEOARTHRITIS
As we age it is common for cartilage to wear down within joints. This is know as Osteoarthritis (OA) and is due to dysfunction and misalignments of the joints. Common areas of the body for one to experience OA are in the hands, hips, knees and most importantly the spine. Every vertebra for a joint with the next vertebrae and in the thoracic spine forms a joint with the ribs. Many people turn to non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or even injections to fight the pain experienced with osteoarthritis. These drugs have many side effects on prolonged use can damage soft tissue, organs and wreak havoc on the gastrointestinal tract.
Chiropractic care offers a drug free approach for helping people with osteoarthritis and living a pain free life!
Research has shown that chiropractic care can help people with osteoarthritis and reduce the pain and symptoms from OA. The research from J Manipulative Physiol Ther 2006;29:107-14 shows that the group receiving chiropractic regain range of motion and show a more rapid reduction in pain versus the non-chiropractic care group. The chiropractic group also shows an improvement in their activities of daily living!
Arthritic pain is not part of the ageing process and can be avoided with specific chiropractic care and rehab. Below are seven ways to prevent and reduce OA.
Receive Chiropractic Care on a Regular Schedule: When vertebrae are fixated or misaligned, the result is a vertebral subluxation complex. The body is a kinetic chain so when one vertebra is out of alignment or even another joint in the body is out of alignment, the rest of the body compensates for the misalignment and more subluxations occur. Chiropractic care restores motion and the proper position of these joints, relieves pain and prevents OA from worsening or re-occuring.
Weight Management: Reducing weight relieving additional stress on your spine and other joints. This can decrease the risk of osteoarthritis development. Also, increase your water intake to keep the body hydrated and stimulate your metabolism.
Supplementation and Antioxidants: There are many cartilage protective agents (chondroprotective) that help repair damage caused by osteoarthritis (Journal of Chiropractic 1900;27:69). Glycosaminoglycans, such as, glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate, can help cartilage and tendon health and ward off OA. Antioxidants are found in grapes, blueberries, raspberries, nuts, dark green vegetables, sweet potatoes and many more.
Consume foods that do not promote inflammation: Red meat is considered an inflammatory food that can lead to degenerative arthritis and soft tissue disorders. Other inflammatory substances that are consumed in high amounts are gluten (breads), dairy, sugar and alcohol. Try eating more nuts, fish, vegetables and fruits.
Powerful anti-inflammatory foods: Avocado/soybean unsaponifiables is an extract made with avocado and soybean. This product has been found to be anti-inflammatory as well as promotes the cartilage producing cells. Again, the food listed above also promote cartilage producing cells.
Exercise: Keeping motion in joints and strengthening muscles is key to preventing OA. Not only does exercise help with OA but weight training has been proven to increase bone density which is crucial as one ages. Try to exercise 3 times of week for 20 minutes or more at a time.
Walk Barefoot: Walking barefoot requires your body to recruit more muscles and more joints in order to move. Prior to doing so, consult your doctor as people with lower extremity circulation issues have a heighten risk of injury or infection.
