Workshop explores retirement, aging issues

Those overwhelmed by mounting decisions around retirement, saving for retirement and long-term care as they age can attend upcoming workshops on the topic. Now in its fifth year, "Own Your Future" is hosted by the Council on Aging of Southwestern Ohio and is meant to help people learn about costs, care options and advanced planning. Every day, 10,000 baby boomers turn age 65 — a daily trend that will continue until 2030, according to Pew Research Center. For 2015, the Council on Aging is planning two Own Your Future workshops. The community can attend from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22 at Sycamore Senior Center, 4455 Carver Woods Drive, Blue Ash, or from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 6 and 13 at West Chester Activity Center, 7900 Cox Road, West Chester. The three-part workshop is an opportunity to learn from experts and get unbiased information about estate planning, legal issues, Medicare and Medicaid, financial planning and long-term care choices. About 70 percent of people will need long-term care during their lifetimes, according to COA. "Planning ahead can help you save money, give you greater control over your assets and resources, and improve the chances you'll be able to live your life the way you want to live it," according to COA. The workshop is for people of any age seeking more information on retirement or expecting to provide help to aging parents or a spouse. Participants will receive a toolkit of information, checklists and resources designed to help them create a long-term care plan of their own. A box meal will be provided. The cost is $20 for the workshop. Space is limited and registration is required online at www.help4seniors.org by August 20 for the Blue Ash event and by Oct. 2 for West Chester. Flawless.  That's acclaimed ventriloquist Brian Tiernan and his partner, "Jerry", one of several characters that came to life this afternoon.  FirstLight HomeCare of West Suburban Boston supported the Needham Senior Center and the Needham Council on Aging through our sponsorship of this performance.  Great crowd of seniors who were truly mesmerized.  We were very proud to be the event sponsor.
