On Saturday, 8/29/15 from 2pm to 6pm, the South Holyoke Safe Neighborhood Initiative (SHSNI) held its 4th annual Party in the Park "Back to School Event" at Carlos Vega Park, in South Holyoke. We had more than 100 volunteers from various agencies, servicing more than 800 community residents that passed through our registration line. The event is part of "Building the Community… One Person at a Time", which is the slogan used by the SHSNI.
In addition to the more than 100 vol...unteers that assisted on Saturday, 48 agencies and/or businesses partnered together to provide the monies and/or services needed to pull off the successful event.
Sodexo School Services provided 1,000 hot dogs and 1,000 hamburgers and the buns and hot dog rolls for the event. Sodexo also provided the grills and all the staff to prepare and serve the food.
The event included a bounce house, power cars, laser tag, a rock climbing wall, live music, three clowns with face painting and balloon sculpturing, tied dyed shirt making, a prayer tent and the Gideons handed out more than 500 bibles to community residents requesting one.
In addition to the hot dogs and hamburgers, refreshments included; popcorn, juice, Friendly ice cream and snow cones.
The Holyoke Water Department hooked up the water for the tied dyed shirts and the Holyoke Gas & Electric provided power for the event. Below is a list of all the agencies and businesses that supported the back to school event:

The Needham Council on Aging and the Wellesley Council on Aging are planning an inspiring, joint program: a performance of The Elders Ensemble of Prometheus Dance.  This is a group of eight post-professional dancers, ages 60-92 who perform original dance/theatre pieces that tell the bittersweet stories of their lives as dancers, daughters, mothers and friends through movement, theatre and text. The October 15th performance is free thanks to the support of Avery Transitional Care & Rehab. (But sign-up is required: 781-455-7555).
